Because LTI 1.3 is still relatively new and it is not always obvious how to set up LTI 1.3, you will find a concise instruction below.
When setting up an LTI 1.3 connection with a supplier, there are a number of fixed steps. First, you receive information from the supplier that needs to be entered. Then you provide information back to the supplier. Once that is completed, the content can be added to the portal.
Information from the supplier
The supplier provides 4 standard URLs:
- Authorization URL (Initiate login URL)
- Redirect URL
- Keyset (JWKS) URL
- Tool URL (= Login URL)
Sometimes there is also a custom parameter, but this is not always the case. If one is provided, it is of course important. A custom parameter is used when the supplier needs a different parameter to recognise the CourseID. The default parameter is 'ID', but there are parties that request a different parameter. Therefore, it may be necessary to include this in the configuration as well.
Once you have received these, you can create a new provider in the portal. You do this via Management > Content management > LTI. Click on add and choose version 1.3.
You can then enter the provided information in that screen:
A supplier that always requires a custom parameter is Skillstown. The Custom parameter for this is: course_identifier. Also tick the 'Use custom value from content (LTICourseID)' checkbox.
Note regarding the Redirect URL: Enter it and then press 'Enter' on your keyboard to save the URL.
We recommend making the label name as unique as possible. If a label name already exists (also in other portals), this can cause problems that prevent the connection from working properly. A format we recommend is [Portal name]+[Supplier]+[LTI version].
In the Custom value field you can enter a CourseID. We strongly advise against this, as you would then need to create a new label for each content item (a lot of duplicate work).
Do you have a custom parameter? Then tick the 'Use custom value from content (LTICourseID)' checkbox. This means the CourseID is retrieved from the content.
If you do not have a custom parameter, you do not need to tick this checkbox.
Information for the supplier
After entering the new label and saving, you can click on the magnifying glass to view the platform details. These are also the details that the supplier needs from the client.
Copy these details and send them to the supplier.
Adding content
Once the content details have also been received, the content can be added to the portal. This can be done via Management > Content management > Manage digital content. Under Add content, choose LTI. Select the label you created and enter the details.
Often the CourseID is sent in a URL. In that case, use the value after the last / (without any query parameters, such as ?x=...). Example: for the URL https://supplier.nl/courses/ABC123 the CourseID is ABC123.
